Kust is a name for a ritual performed amidst spring and summer, originating from Ukrainian and Belarussian Polissia, usually taking place at the time of Holy Trinity feast, devoted to the cult of the ancestors and vegetation. Women dressed with leaves of sweet flag, maple and birch used to go through the village and sing special songs, that enhanced the fertility of the soil. Leaves were also used to decorate households - fens, doors and windows. The bush - kust - is believed to be a symbol of family aggregate or tribal branching. Traditionally, the day before, lamentations were being sung on the graves of the ancestors.
